One of the most beloved Christmas treats, Sicilian nougat boasts a long history. It can be easily made at home using the original recipe, which allows you to create an authentic treat that’s particularly popular throughout Italy. That’s right—nougat is every bit as good as the classic Italian panettone and pandoro or the traditional Sicilian desserts everyone goes crazy for (including cassata and cannoli). But what’s the story behind this delicacy? Here’s everything you need to know.
Where did nougat originate, what is its significance, and what was its original name?
As is reasonable to assume, the origins of Sicilian nougat can be traced back to Arab culture (and the corresponding Arab rule and influence on the island). The original name for nougat is, in fact, “cubbaita,” derived from the Arabic word “qubbaita.”
Bronte Dolci’s pistachio nougat squares, known to everyone as “Brontoncini,” are one of our pastry chefs’ signature products. Soft, indulgent, and delicious, thanks to a sweet white pistachio chocolate coating and a soft pistachio nougat center. Our pistachio nougat treats are packaged in an elegant 100-gram cube, perfect as a sweet gift for all your special occasions.
In addition to the pistachio variety, you can also find our “brontoncini” on our website in almond versions coated in various flavors.
