The origins of almond pastries date back a very long time; in fact, they are said to have originated in the late 1100s at the Martorana convent in Palermo, attached to the church of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, which owes its name to Giorgio D’Antiochia, admiral to King Roger II. The name “reale” (royal) given to this confection can be traced to the fact that it was “worthy of a king” due to its deliciousness and distinctive qualities.

Almond cookies are one of the traditional desserts typical of Sicilian pastry-making. They are a type of cookie made from almond paste. This dessert is one of the most famous traditional Sicilian products in the world.
